Replacing Lost Teeth

Replacing Lost Teeth at Heaton Moor Dental

At Heaton Moor Dental in Stockport, we do everything possible to save a tooth but sometimes we have to accept that an extraction is necessary. When that happens or you have other missing teeth there are several ways to replace them and fill any gaps.

We will spend time to discuss these options with you and to assess fully your dentition and the health of the supporting gums. There is not one right solution, it is personal to you and once we have offered you choices we will also discuss costs and timescales with you. We want you to be part of these discussions so you feel delighted with whichever path you choose to travel down.

Dental Implants

Replacing a tooth or teeth with dental implants is considered to be the closest possible feeling to a natural tooth. A small titanium rod is inserted into the bone under the gum under local anaesthetic and is initially left to integrate into the bone for around three months. After that time we will uncover the implant and place a crown on to the titanium rod or perhaps a bridge if a larger span.

Dental implants can be used to support crowns, bridges or even full dentures. Perhaps you currently have a loose denture that will not stay in place when eating and you would like it to be firmer? We can use two small implants to help “click” the denture in to place and aid it’s retention.

Dental implants, with the right aftercare, can give many decades of service and we recommend a regular maintenance plan with our dental hygienists for our patients with dental implants.

At Heaton Moor Dental we generally use the Straumann® Dental lmplant Digital Placement System. It  is renowned for its exceptional quality and reliability.

The Straumann® system is one of the most extensively scientifically documented implant systems in the world, comprising surgical implants and prosthetic components that connect the implant with the crown of the replacement tooth.

We are fortunate to be part of Straumann’s 3D diagnostic system, we can pre-plan to show you a three dimensional model overlying your CT scan so we can plan an ideal outcome for you.

Dr Bal has had articles published in the dental press explaining all about this system, one of these articles is available to read by following this link Implant Article by Dr Bal.

Dr Bal Sekhon is highly qualified and trained to place dental implants having gained an MSc with Distinction in Implantology. We are also fortunate to be supported by our Implant Nurse, Lynn Darlington, who has accumulated 20 years of experience.

Dr Vab Vyas also has a Diploma in Restorative Dentistry and he and Dr Bal are continually updating their skills and knowledge to offer the highest possible care.

Dental Bridges

Missing teeth can be replaced by bridges of which there are several types. Bridges are fixed in placed once completed and cannot be removed.

Fixed Bridge

This bridge is fixed at either side of the space by crowns joined together to make one structure that looks like separate teeth.

Cantilever Bridge

Similar to a fixed bridge but only attached on one side of the space.

Maryland Bridge

Often called a “sticky” bridge, this required minimal or no preparation of teeth on one side of the space with a wing that is bonded on to the back surface of the tooth.

Each of these bridges have their merits and each case will depend on various elements as to which bridge is used. If the teeth either side of the space have already been prepared with crowns then a fixed bridge or cantilever bridge would probably be the choice.

If  a tooth has not had any intervention then a Maryland bridge would be preferable as we then retain as much tooth tissue as possible.

A bridge will restore form and function. They are constructed by our very skilled dental technician following impressions of the teeth being taken. Bridges are generally made out of aesthetic ceramics plus some precious metals and once made are “glue” into place back at the dental practice.

With good maintenance and good oral hygiene they can last many years an be very successful.

Denture Clinic

Dentures are a removable way to replace teeth from one single missing tooth right through to a full arch. They are generally made of plastic or a combination of plastic and metal. Some dentures can be made in a flexible material, Valplast, too. Dentures replace missing teeth and the associated bone support so can often be a preferable way to replace teeth when a lot of support is missing. The denture can thus help support the soft tissues and reduce the appearance of ageing.

Dentures are constructed by our very skilled dental technicians in the dental laboratory following impressions being taken of your mouth. It is usual for a denture to take 4-5 visits before completion, each stage being tried and tested for size, comfort and fit.

We can also construct precision attachments for dentures that help connect the denture with existing teeth for firmness and security or perhaps with connecting joints in dental implants again to aid retention and reduce movement when chewing or talking.

Dentures are often used as interim restorations following extraction of a tooth to allow a period of time for healing before a permanent solution is decided upon.
