Differences between NHS and Independent dentistry

Heaton Moor Dental is an independent dental practice, so how is that different to an NHS dental practice. The answer is, in many ways, but for starters, we are not tied to the NHS and hence our patient care is not designed to service an NHS contract

With the headlines continually outlining the difficulties facing NHS, it is no surprise that it is the patients that are losing out. NHS dentistry may not get the same publicity as Hospital or GP’s, however, it is equally affected.

NHS dentistry is contract based hence in order to avoid financial penalties, dentists need to hit their targets. This is the fundamental difference between an NHS practice and an Independent practice. Since we don’t have targets set by an external body such as the NHS we do not face the same pressures as NHS dentists.

Ultimately, it all boils down to the patient and how this affects their care.

As independent dentists, we are able to spend quality time with our patients. The ‘pressure is off’ in terms of taking the time to really understand their problems or concerns. We are able to carry out thorough assessments and then relay the information back to the patient. Enabling them to understand their oral health better and make informed decisions. We are not rushed to complete treatments and this can help deliver an overall better patient experience.

As independent dentists, we are not tied to offering limited treatment options (as can be the case on the NHS) and focus on what is in the best interest of the patient. Also, to maintain the competitive edge we are able to invest in the latest technology to enhance patient care.

We are able to offer a better range of opening hours to ensure our patients don’t have to take unnecessary time off work.

Finally, independent dentistry doesn’t have to break the bank. We are able to offer payment plans and membership plans which can cost less than an annual gym membership or a phone contract. Some treatments can end up costing you less in the long term compared to an NHS alternative.

Why not see for your self the differences and meet our team? We would be delighted to welcome you to Heaton Moor Dental soon.
